Curriculum

In TK–5 English Language Arts, students become confident readers, thoughtful writers, and effective communicators who develop a lifelong love of literacy. Through explicit instruction in foundational reading skills, differentiated small-group instruction, rich literature, collaborative discussions, and authentic writing experiences, students build strong literacy skills while learning to think critically, communicate clearly, and express their ideas with confidence. As students progress through the elementary years, they develop proficiency in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, literary analysis, informational reading, and the writing process in alignment with the Common Core State Standards.
 

In TK–5 mathematics, students become confident mathematicians and logical problem solvers who grapple and persevere through challenges, collaborate with others, and explain their thinking with clarity. Through hands-on exploration with manipulatives, collaborative problem solving, and meaningful mathematical discussions, students build conceptual understanding as they progress from concrete experiences to visual models and abstract reasoning. Along the way, they develop strong number sense and foundational skills in place value, operations, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and mathematical practices in alignment with the Common Core State Standards.
 

In TK–5 science, students become curious scientists and thoughtful problem solvers who ask questions, make observations, design investigations, and use evidence to better understand the world around them. Through the research-based FOSS (Full Option Science System) curriculum, students conduct hands-on investigations, document observations and evidence in science notebooks, collaborate with classmates, and design solutions to authentic problems, actively engaging in the practices of science rather than simply learning about scientific concepts. As students progress through the elementary years, they explore life, earth, and physical sciences through topics such as plants and animals, weather and space, matter and energy, and Earth's changing systems, building scientific knowledge in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards.
 

In TK–5 social studies, students become informed citizens and thoughtful global learners who develop an understanding of their place in their community, their country, and the world. Through integrated units, rich literature, research projects, simulations, discussions, and authentic learning experiences, students explore history, geography, economics, government, and diverse cultures while learning to think critically, appreciate multiple perspectives, and recognize how their actions can make a positive difference. As students progress through the elementary years, they build historical understanding by studying communities, citizenship, American history, California history, geography, economics, and current events in alignment with the California History–Social Science Framework.
 

In TK–5 religion, students develop a strong understanding of Scripture, Catholic teachings, prayer, morality, and the sacraments while exploring how faith, character, and service shape the way we live and care for others. Through Bible study, thoughtful discussion, daily prayer, service opportunities, and personal reflection, students examine life's big questions, develop moral reasoning, and discover how Gospel values can guide everyday decisions. As students progress through the elementary years, they revisit these foundational teachings with increasing depth, preparing Catholic students to celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion while fostering respect for the beliefs, traditions, and dignity of all people.
 

Our art program encourages students to see the world through a creative lens. Guided by a professional artist, students work with a variety of media and techniques while exploring the elements and principles of design. Along the way, they discover historical and contemporary artists, develop an appreciation for beauty, and build the confidence to express their own unique creative voice.
 

Students develop a strong foundation in musicianship through singing, movement, listening, rhythm, melody, and musical performance under the guidance of an accomplished musician who helps children discover both the discipline and the joy of making music. As they progress through the grades, students build music literacy, explore diverse musical traditions and instruments, and develop the confidence needed to perform for authentic audiences.
 

Language learning begins with meaningful communication. Through songs, stories, games, projects, and conversation, an expert language educator creates an engaging environment where students develop confidence in speaking and understanding Spanish while building vocabulary and cultural awareness. Each year strengthens their foundation as they grow into capable, curious, and enthusiastic language learners.
 

Our research-based Physical Education program helps students develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Students build coordination, strength, teamwork, resilience, and good sportsmanship through engaging games, movement challenges, fitness activities, and cooperative play. Along the way, they discover that being active is both fun and rewarding while developing the skills and confidence to enjoy sports and physical activity for years to come.

Executive functioning skills are intentionally developed throughout the TK–8 experience, with a focused emphasis in Fifth Grade as students prepare for the increased independence and responsibility of middle school. Through a year-long Study Skills course, students receive direct instruction and practice in organization, time management, goal setting, note-taking, reading and listening strategies, research skills, test preparation, study habits, and effective communication. Students also develop critical thinking and self-management skills through the use of Thinking Maps, Habits of Mind, growth mindset practices, and character education, building the confidence and independence needed for continued academic success. Fifth graders also strengthen digital readiness by learning to use tools such as Google Classroom and email responsibly as they prepare for the expectations of middle school.

Building on a strong mathematical foundation, students at NDA use technology to bring real­-world math problems to life. Students collaborate with one another and with hands­-on manipulatives to develop a variety of problem solving strategies. They work to model good mathematical practices including perseverance, applying prior knowledge, and constructing viable arguments. Real­-life math application, from calculating the sales tax on a video game to analyzing average daily water consumption, makes the content relevant to students’ lives as they progress to more challenging topics of study.

Middle school language arts students learn to articulate and express their ideas and beliefs through rigorous and meaningful experiences with a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. A core element of the language arts program is the development of students' communication skills. Students practice communicating across a variety of platforms, including engaging classroom discussions, written narratives and essays, technological presentations, public speaking, and media and art. Students become experts in effectively navigating the different expectations and challenges of these different forms of communication. As their communication skills evolve, students engage in actively reading and analyzing a text to develop their higher ­level critical thinking skills, build their general knowledge and vocabulary, and participate in a larger global community, fostering a life-long appreciation for literature.

NDA scientists bring a love of science, excitement for discovery, and a passion for learning to the classroom each day. With the use of FOSS, the Full Option Science System, a research-based, active learning science curriculum, students explore their world through experimentation when building volcanoes, looking at cells under a microscope, dissecting chicken wings, and combining the principles of physics to solve real­ world problems. Enhanced by technological tools, middle school scientists are constantly being challenged to think critically, persist, and become independent and conscientious leaders.

NDA's coed middle school social studies program allows students to engage with the past while making connections to their own lives. Students have opportunities to bring history to life through hands­-on experiences like mummifying chickens, simulating life in feudal Japan, and creating iMovie commercials for historic events. Students read, write, and think like historians. Students analyze primary and secondary texts and ask critical thinking questions while using technology to develop a thorough understanding of how the world they live in today came to be. These learning experiences, both collaborative and individual, support students in their development of 21st century skills needed to be successful in high school and beyond.

At NDA, students build a strong foundation in Scripture, the sacraments, and Catholic values. They learn to express their faith through both words and actions, drawing inspiration from the parables of Jesus and connecting timeless lessons to their daily lives. Through classroom discussions, prayer, and reflection, students come to understand that God doesn’t call the perfect, He equips each of us with the grace and gifts needed to serve.

Religion class at NDA is a dynamic and inviting space. With flexible seating and an environment designed to spark reflection and conversation, students experience religion as both relevant and “cool.” The classroom is a space where students can ask big questions, explore Catholic teachings, and feel at home growing in faith.

Beginning in the early grades, students are encouraged to see challenges as opportunities for growth, connecting the Old Testament, Habits of Mind, and Growth Mindset with God’s invitation to live with purpose and compassion. They recognize their unique spiritual gifts and actively share them in our school community leading prayer services, participating in Mass, and engaging in acts of service.

Faith in action is woven into every grade level. Whether it's donating to our Buck-a-Stuff drives, organizing collections for the poor, sending care packages to troops, or simply choosing kindness each day, students strive to lift others up and lead by example.

In middle school, students participate in Community Time as part of their religion curriculum, a dedicated period to build relationships, discuss relevant and often complex topics, and hear from guest speakers who challenge and inspire. This time helps students navigate the social, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of adolescence while fostering a deep sense of belonging and connection to one another and to trusted adults on campus.

Eighth graders take their learning further by studying Tattoos on the Heart by Fr. Greg Boyle and visiting Homeboy Industries. Through this experience, they explore the themes of forgiveness, grace, and social justice, and reflect on key principles of Catholic Social Teaching, including the dignity of work, care for creation, and solidarity with those in need.

At NDA, we believe in using technology with purpose. Our middle school follows a 1:1 iPad program where students use devices as learning tools when and how the teacher determines it enhances instruction. iPads support access to digital textbooks and allow students to demonstrate their understanding in creative, engaging ways, such as through podcasts, slide presentations, and video projects.

At the same time, we prioritize real-world connection and presence. NDA maintains a phone-free environment while on campus and our teachers intentionally balance screen time with hands-on activities, discussion, and collaborative learning. By using technology mindfully, we help students build focus, creativity, and critical thinking skills that prepare them for the future without compromising the values of the present.

Our middle school elective program is designed to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and strengthen community. Each trimester, students in grades 6–8 choose from a wide range of mixed-grade elective courses from cooking, improv, and robotics to printmaking, fitness, and leadership.

Electives are intentionally crafted to reflect the passions of our faculty, who have the freedom to design courses they’re excited to teach. This model sparks authentic engagement from both students and teachers. All electives are graded on a pass/fail basis, encouraging students to take responsible risks, try something new, and grow in ways that go beyond a traditional academic setting.

Whether exploring new interests, developing emerging talents, or building friendships across grade levels, students gain real-world skills and discover more about who they are and how they learn best.

Students who practice what they're learning in a hands­-on environment can retain three and a half times as much information than just sitting in a desk and listening intently. From calculating the speed and velocity of toy cars, to running an earthquake simulation with Jell­-o, to skinning a chicken wing to examine bones, muscles, and skin, students in Science are engaged in a variety of hands­-on activities designed to enhance learning. But hands­-on projects are not limited to Science. Students recreate Rome and run a Warlords of Japan simulation in Social Studies. They put their math skills to use to calculate water consumption rates and solve other real­-world problems in Math and while working the Bake Sales and Snack Shop. They participate in service opportunities and plan religious services in religion, and run and lead the TK buddy program and School Families events to gain valuable leadership skills. Class curriculum is also enhanced by field trips designed to support instruction. Eighth ​graders take field trips to the Museum of Tolerance when reading the Diary of Anne Frank in Language Arts and Homeboy Industries following their reflection and analysis of Tattoos on the Heart​  in Religion. Seventh graders travel to the LA Science Center to complement their science curriculum and sixth graders venture to the Getty Villa to learn about Greek, Roman, and Etruscan life and artifacts supporting both Social Studies and Language Arts.

In accordance with our mission, philosophy, and SLEs, we strive to nurture socially responsible citizens ­ persons of moral integrity who make a positive difference in today’s world. Church doctrine states that “(A) person is formed for b​eing­ with ​and for ­others,​ which is realized in love” (Educating Together in Catholic Schools). NDA forms such persons by providing students with many opportunities to serve others. Making sandwiches for a local food pantry, collecting Halloween costumes for a women’s and children’s shelter or donating toiletry items for a homeless shelter, NDA students and their families serve the local community. Additionally, each class sponsors a service organization. Throughout the year students learn about their class’s organization and raise money for their cause through Buck­a­Stuff donations. In addition to these outreach projects, there is a concerted effort to serve each other on campus, as each student, teacher, administrator, and parent strives to lift each other up through words and actions, SLE awards, character education, and anti-­bullying campaigns. At NDA we love, serve, and grow together as a family.

At NDA, girls discover their place in the ever-evolving world. Our Innovation Program empowers middle school girls with the skills and confidence to thrive in a rapidly changing world. By integrating the ARK Education Initiative and Design Thinking principles, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. They explore innovation concepts while developing skills in coding, robotics, and environmental science—preparing them to shape the future with confidence and creativity.

Our small class sizes allow for an individualized approach to developing girls’ math skills, with a vertically aligned curriculum that prepares students for success in high school mathematics. Math courses are tiered and differentiated to ensure every student is appropriately challenged and supported. Through engaging instruction and targeted support, students build confidence, master core concepts, and grow into capable, independent problem-solvers.
 

Our integrated humanities approach combines English and Social Studies, helping students see the connections between literature and history. This alignment deepens their grasp of historical events while enhancing their reading and writing skills in meaningful ways. By engaging with diverse perspectives, debating, and analyzing firsthand accounts, students develop richer, more authentic understandings. This method is especially effective for girls, fostering critical thinking and empathy as they bring history to life through their writings, discussions, and projects.

At NDA, we use FOSS (Full Option Science System), developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley, to provide hands-on, authentic science instruction that mirrors real scientific practice. Our students actively engage as investigators, participating in tactile, lab-based experiences that foster a deep love for science. The FOSS curriculum emphasizes purposeful environmental science, allowing students to explore and understand scientific concepts through real-world, inquiry-based learning. By encouraging active exploration, we empower students to become critical thinkers, discovering and analyzing the world around them.

Diverse programs at NDA allow students to explore their passions and develop new skills through enrichment opportunities led by field experts. With a wide range of possible offerings in visual and performing arts, STEM, liturgical choir, athletics, communications, filmmaking, podcasting, environmental experiences, robotics, and Model United Nations, students can engage in hands-on learning that inspires innovation and leadership. These adjunct opportunities are designed to empower our students to become future leaders and creative thinkers.

Art is thought made visible. Not only do images surround and shape our lives, but everything fabricated is designed by an artist, architect, or designer. The study of Visual Arts and Art History allows the individual agency over her world.

Communicate your ideas using the knowledge of visual language, and the elements and principles of design. Innovate while developing specific skill sets in each class. Analyze the historical and cultural context of art to make sense of your world. Visit museums, explore philosophy and theory, and write essays (one per semester) that expand your knowledge of our global landscape. Generate and present a portfolio each quarter and develop an understanding of art critics and aesthetic views through critiques.
